Healing by the Water: Surf Therapy
Surfing and therapy are probably two different activities you may not be used to seeing associated with one another. However, both are healing and restorative in their own ways. Surf therapy combines the therapeutic benefits of both surfing and therapy in a synergistic way. You will have the space and guidance to process your own experiences in life while on the beach, and then we will move this space out into the water. In this way, you will be learning how to overcome your own unique challenges, and then experiencing that healing out in the water!
No! Just like everyone has their own unique challenges, backgrounds and ways to heal, everyone also has different experiences and relationships with the ocean. In addition to being a therapist, I also have an experienced background in teaching folks to how to surf and swim; therefore, I understand everyone takes to the water in their own way. If you’re not reading to hop on a surfboard, we get that and we will respect your pace.
A typical surf therapy session will be 1.5 hours long, and take place on the beach. There will also be an initial intake session that will be an in-office, or virtual, session that lasts 45min-1 hour.
Surf therapy sessions we be scheduled for Friday’s throughout the summer. If there is inclement weather, we will try to reschedule for Saturdays. Additionally, surfing conditions are not always ideal but we will still always try to have our surf therapy sessions. When there’s a shortage of waves there is still no shortage of creative and therapeutic ways to experience the ocean (boogie boarding, bodysurfing, beach games, etc.)!
There are many instruments of change experienced through surf therapy, and one we hold dear is the community that comes from experiencing the ocean with others. It is so important to us that in fostering this community by the water we strive to provide multiculturally sensitive services that affirm the dignity, worth and value of all individuals. Additionally, we will listen to and respect the different relationships with the water that individuals from different multicultural backgrounds can have, and will seek to empower them through our community. Community by the water to us means being mindful and accepting of the diverse backgrounds and experiences we all come from, to create a safe space for all while healing and enjoying the sport of surfing.
