The Gathering Space
Healing through Yoga: Yoga + Therapy
Yoga typically involves various physical and mental exercises. The physical components involve postures that aim to increase coordination, balance, and muscle strength. The mental exercises often include breathing techniques to help increase mental clarity, decrease stress and/or anxiety, and enhance relaxation.
As every client has their own background, experiences, and unique challenges, each class will be created in a manner that combines therapeutic techniques with yoga postures and breathwork, while also allowing space for clients to take what they need and leave what they don’t.
For individual and group sessions, music will be provided, but there is also the ability for the client to bring their own music for an individual session.
For individual sessions, our therapist will work closely with each client to identify and create therapeutic goals. As each client’s challenges and needs will differ, their goals may vary greatly.
For group sessions, the overarching goal is to learn yoga poses and various breathing techniques to create new coping skills.
No, all levels of yoga experience are welcome.
If you own a yoga or workout mat, please bring it to class with you. For individual sessions, a yoga mat can be borrowed for the duration of the session. Please wear comfortable clothing (i.e., leggings/shorts, t-shirt, tank top, etc.), avoid overly baggy clothing, and bring a water bottle to each class.
Group classes will be approximately 1 hour, and individual classes will be about 45-50 minutes. Each class will take place at The Gathering Space.
If you are interested in participating in either a group or individual class, please call The Gathering Space to set-up an initial intake session. The intake can take place in-office, or virtually, and will take approximately 45 minutes. During the intake session, the therapist will ask the client clarifying questions about relevant background information and therapeutic goals.
Our Healing through Yoga therapist, Claire Maxwell, is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina. She is also a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT- 200) through Yoga Alliance. Therefore, she has a unique ability to combine therapeutic skills and knowledge with yoga poses.
Healing through Yoga classes are tailored to embrace clients’ uniqueness and to acknowledge that each client emotionally and physically carries different types of traumas. Therefore, our therapist will strive to maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all clients, regardless of personal and/or cultural differences, during group and individual classes. Factors such as music, language, and poses will be taken into consideration to help promote safety and inclusivity. Overall, the purpose of this program is to allow everyBODY the opportunity to support and enhance their physical and mental health. Thus, this program combines therapy and yoga to service physical and psychological needs at the same time, and takes place outside of a typical yoga studio, to reach clients in the comfort of their own community.
